The Pecatonica River has a history of
flooding the Darlington Business District. The repeated
flooding over time had led to deterioration in many
downtown buildings and impacted the vitality of the
Business District. After a major flood in 1993,
Darlington received a Hazard Mitigation Grant from FEMA
to floodproof downtown buildings and to acquire and
relocate some of the businesses from the flood plain.
The project also received assistance from the Wisconsin
Department of Commerce, the Department of Natural
Resources, the State Historical Society and the
Wisconsin Division of Emergency Government. To date, 17
commercial buildings have been floodproofed and another
12 were acquired and razed. The benefit of the downtown
revitalization activities includes:
- Flood Protection
- Economic Revitalization
- Historic Preservation
