Upon completion of a
Storm Water Management Plan, the City of Prairie du
Chien implemented construction of a new storm water
interceptor to serve the City’s east side. The project
served an area which had multiple deficiencies resulting
in localized flooding.
The interceptor sewer
is 7,800 lineal feet in length and serves as a 700-acre
watershed. The interceptor incorporated wet and dry
detention basins, a drainage diversion, and a new
greenway into the design. The greenway concept included
a small diameter storm sewer drain and infiltration of
storm water. The greenway also incorporated a
multi-purpose path which was identified as a need in the
City’s Transportation Plan.
The cost of the East
Side Interceptor Sewer was reduced significantly by
using a combination grass waterway and small diameter
storm water drain. This design was estimated to reduce
the project cost by 25% when compared to conventional
large diameter pipe.
Vierbicher Associates,
Inc. provided engineering and surveying services for the
project including preparation of plans and
specifications, preparation of easements, bidding and
contract award, and construction staking and inspection.
