Project Description

Vierbicher has been assisting the Village of DeForest in developing a community wide trail network over the last several years. To date, over 17 miles of trails have been constructed. Most recently, Vierbicher has assisted the Village with the development of the Upper Yahara River Trail (UYRT) system through the Upper Yahara River Corridor. This trail system spans over 2.6 miles from South Street at the north end to Windsor Road at the south end. The trail consists of a 10’ wide porous asphalt trail through the uplands with 3800’ of boardwalk in wetland areas, and two 65’ clear span bridges. The boardwalk sections included a metal frame structure with composite HDPE decking. Vierbicher assisted with the review and selection of the systems, with materials chosen for ease of maintenance, longevity and sustainability (recycled plastic). The asphalt segments of the project were constructed with a porous asphalt pavement, also for maintenance and environmental considerations. This project required coordination with WDNR for wetland construction as well as flood plain modeling and permitting for the bridge crossing.

Vierbicher has assisted the Village with many of the activities related to design and construction of this trail system. This includes the conceptual planning for trail locations as well as the property owner negotiations, surveys and easements required to secure the location of the trail. Staff assisted with wetland delineation and permitting, archaeological investigations and preparing grant applications and later administration for the WDNR Stewardship Grant and Dane County Partner for Recreation and Conservation (PARC) grant. For the design phase, Vierbicher completed the topographic survey and mapping, design of the bridge and boardwalk components as well as the porous asphalt pavement system, completed the floodplain hydraulic modeling, and assisted with the budgeting process including preparation of cost opinions. Moving forward with construction, staff administered the bidding and construction process, as well as contract administration.
