Project Description

Located at the intersection of Sixth Street and East Washington Avenue in the City of Madison, the new UW Health facility at Union Corners opened in December of 2016 to replace the former UW Health East Towne Clinic. This $20 million public-private partnership sits on a former Rayovac battery factory site, and was the first phase of an extensive redevelopment plan for Union Corners. Vierbicher provided civil engineering and stormwater management services for the project.

As a brownfield, the site presented a variety of parameters for redevelopment. Multiple bio-retention basins within the parking lot filter pollutants from storm water and manage the run-off that is discharged from the site.

Use of the site for healthcare provided the opportunity to highlight accessbility not only within the development, but as a connection within the community. A bike path through the site links to the larger City of Madison bicycle trail network and provides yet another option for transit within the area.

This project has received LEED Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council and was named as one of the Top Projects of 2016 by The Daily Reporter.
